WILLOW BROOK GARDEN CLUB
Willow Brook Garden Club has been part of our neighborhood since 1966. Our membership is made up of women within the neighborhood and outside of it who share a common interest in gardening, horticulture and floral design. Gardening skills range from novices (I can barely keep a cactus alive) to "seasoned veterans" with a wealth of knowledge and experience to share.
Horticultural-related interests in the club are just as diverse as our membership's gardening skills. And so, while the club's official objectives are to "promote and encourage the beautification of our neighborhoods, to encourage interest and activity in horticulture fields, to promote conservation of the natural resources of the area, and to enhance our homes through artistic use of flowers and plants", in reality, we enjoy the beauty of flowers and sense of fulfillment that flowers and gardening can impart.
Our meetings typically include light refreshments and a speaker or demonstration. Some of our past programs have included speakers who discuss garden design, use of native plants, planting for sun or shade, deer resistant plants, and soil preparation. To add that "special touch" to house or table, we've had flower arranging demonstrations for both winter and summer holidays. We've also had clinics on how to make boxwood wreaths and various types of flower arrangements. Lastly, no garden club is worthy of its name if it doesn't have a flower show. We have an annual flower show in the spring where members can display their skills at making flower arrangements, or their gardening prowess with horticulture entries.
Members are encouraged to participate and the atmosphere is low key, supportive, and friendly. "Extra-curricular" activities include day trips to special local gardens, floral exhibits and flower shows.
The Willow Brook Garden Club has provided flower arrangements for the Fairfax City Spring Home Tour, and Green Spring Gardens Christmas display.
Our major fundraising event is an annual plant sale held at Ilda Pool. We also do a semi-annual outreach activity with the Heatherwood Assisted Retirement Community.
The Willow Brook Garden Club generally meets on the third Wednesday of each month, September through May, at 7:30 p.m. in the Wakefield Forest Elementary School cafeteria.
If you have an interest in gardening, floral design, or just want to get to know some of your neighbors and meet other people with similar interests, we encourage you to join us. New members are welcomed throughout the year.
